Meet our 2020 Ambassador Family
Stacia & Leon Shahan

The March of Dimes holds a special place in our life. To us it means just that: life. Early in my pregnancy I developed hypertension. Once it became clear that I would not be able to carry to full term, my doctor suggested that I receive steroids to help our daughter's lungs develop faster. Our beautiful daughter, Addison Harper, was born at 28 weeks. She weighed 2 pounds, 10 ounces, and was just 15 inches long. She came into this world crying with an apgar score of 8/9. She was whisked into NICU breathing with a c-pap machine, no ventilator needed. Because of this, we hoped we would have smooth sailing, but we quickly learned with a preemie everything can change.  Addison developed pneumothorax in both her lungs within 24-hours.  The doctors placed her on a ventilator so that she could receive life saving surfactant therapy. In less than 8 hours, she was off the ventilator and breathing with a c-pap machine again. By day six, the tubes in her lungs were clamped and we were able to hold her for the first time. After six long weeks we were able to bring Addison home from NICU.
Six weeks seemed like an eternity to us, but many preemies spend far longer in NICU. Without the research that the March of Dimes has provided, our daughter would not be here today. In NICU, it is not inches and pounds, but centimeters and grams that matter. Every obstacle the March of Dimes helps you overcome results in another centimeter closer to the goal of taking your baby home. Throughout the ordeal, the March of Dimes is there for both children and parents. We thank you for your support of this very worthy cause.
